Fairs are held in Mountbellew, Ballygar and Glenamaddy twice a month. Fairs are held in towns as a rule. A fair was held in Newbridge long ago on April the 6th but it is not held now. The fairs are held in the streets. A toll is paid on cattle bought in Mountbellew, three pence a head is paid and it is given to Mt. Bellew. Luck is given by the seller of the cattle to the buyer the greater the price the more luck that is given. People strike hands at a bargain and divide what is between them. Dealers mark the cattle with raddle but farmers mark them with dirt.
