Butter Well
Booleying
Christy Cunniffe
Stepping stones are an important communications feature of the Slieve Aughty’s uplands. They are encountered regularly as one traverses the landscape. This example in Derryoober is located beside a domestic well known as the Butter Well. The well was likely used by those undertaking booleying in the commonage here in the past. Michael Walsh one of the farmers that uses the commonage, is shown sitting by the well. He has been very helpful in identifying archaeological and cultural sites in the area.
