Describing a churn

Ballinasloe, Co. Galway

A churn is used for making butter. The churn we have at home is a dash churn about 20 years old. It holds 7 gallons of milk and it is worked by placing the dash in the churn and putting gin an axel secured with a screw which is turned by hand. The revolving dash churns the cream into butter. It is done once a week and winter and every 2nd day in summer. My mother does the churning but I take a turn when she gets tired.
