Doon Castle

 

 

The site of Doon Castle is situated on the north shore of Streamstown Bay and in the townland of Doon. The castle was in existence in 1574 when Edmund OFlairte lived there. Some say that it was also occupied, at some stage, by a rather notorious man by the name of O’Halloran, who indiscriminately ordered many, that he took a dislike to, to be executed by being thrown into the sea from the heights of the castle. Today, only the foundations and remnants of a wall along the west and part of the north side still remain. The ruins that are visible today are of a later house that was built on the site.
