Muckanagh North is situated in the civil parish of Killeroran, Barony of Killian, County Galway. Located at the Eastern border of Killeroran, Muckanagh North is bounded by the townlands Killeroran and Tully. It is separated from Muckanagh South by the River Shiven. The River Suck divides Muckanagh North from the townland of Cloonakilleg in the parish of Tisrara, Barony of Athlone, County Roscommon.

The Down Survey Map states the 1641 (Pre-Cromwell) owner of Muckanagh North was John Kelly (Catholic). Colonel John Kelly (Catholic) was the owner in 1670 (Post-Cromwell). The Down Survey name was Muckena.

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books indicates Muckanagh North is owned by Dennis Kelly Esq. and is held under deed forever by the same. It contains bog land, while the remainder is made up of arable and pasture. It pays £14-5-9½ County Cess.

Census 1841-1851

According to the 1851 census, Muckanagh North consists of 624 acres, 2 roods and 2 perches. The 1841 population was 186 people, 93 of whom were male and 93 were female. There were 28 houses, all of which were occupied. The population had increased to 194 people by 1851, 98 of whom were male and 96 were female. There were 36 houses, 32 of which were occupied. The poor law valuation paid in 1851 was £186-15-0.

Griffith’s Valuation 1847-1864

According to Griffith’s Valuation, Denis H. Kelly was the immediate lessor of the land. Holding 1 measured 519 acres, 2 roods and 10 perches and was leased to 35 people.

Census 1901

There were 29 houses in Muckanagh North in 1901, all of which were occupied. The total population was 177 people, 89 of whom were male and 88 were female. The heads of the households were as follows: John Farrell, Thomas Healy, Bridget Heally, John Fallon, Patrick Healy, John Healy, Patrick Healy, Hanora Keighery, Michael Lohan, John Hannon, Patrick Hannon, Hugh Hannon, Bridget Flynn, Bridget Smith, John Haverty, Mathew Farrell, Thomas Hannon, Michael Farrell, Patt Keegan, Michael Keegan, Mary Kelly, Ellen Kelly, Hanora Kelly, Bridget Kelly, Patrick Nolan, Catherine Hannon, Patt Heally, Bridget Keegan and Hanoria Keegan. All residents of Muckanagh North in 1901 were born in County Galway, except Anne Hannon in House 10, Kate Hannon in House 11, Mary Hannon in House 12, Mary Anne Flynn in House 13 and Bridget Keegan and Martin Smith in House 28 who were all born in County Roscommon. All inhabitants were Roman Catholic.
