The townland of Cloonmaghaura is located within the parish of Templetogher, barony of Ballymoe, county Galway. In Irish, its name is Cluain Moghára, translating to the lawn or meadow of the standing stone. It was first documented in 1587 as “Kearowmoghar”. There were 10 different variations of names for this townland until 1838. O’Donovans Field Name Documents provides the description and situation, stating “There are four portions of bog situated in the N.W., N.E., West and South portions of this townland. A portion of Lough Rhoil Bui and also a portion of Lough-na-Maughtery belongs to this townland. The road from Dunmore to Kilnalag passes from W. to N. N.E. through it. There are two villages named after the townland and the remainder of this land is tillage and pasture. Cloonmaghhaura is situated at the South boundary of this parish joining the parishes of Bweeounagh and Dunmore, Barony of Tiaquin and Ballymoe”. Its geographic centrepoint is  53.6606, -8.63325.
