  • The Uí Maine hereditary inauguration mound was on the hill of Cluain Acha Liag, now called Killeroran near Ballygar.
An translational error made by Rev. Patrick MacLoughlin and accepted somewhat willy-nilly by John O’Donovan has resulted in the perpetuation of this ‘Clontuskert myth’, even by local academics!!
The poor translation of an abstract of the Book of Lecan, done by Rev. Patrick Mac Loughlin whose rendition of the Irish phrase “Comarba Cluana Tuaiscirt na Sinda , dar ab dual righadh sil Ceallaigh”, instead of being “the coarb of Clontuskert of the Shannon whose hereditary role was the inauguration of the progeny of Ceallach” was in fact “(the coarb of Clontuskert-ne-sinne) WHERE the O’Kellys are inaugurated.”
O’Donovan, in silly mood – and not for the first time – deemed McLoughlin’s error to be ‘kinda OK’ (my words).
