House Keeping
Weekly Shopping list October 1950
Catherine O Malley
This is a sample extract from a notebook, kept by a newly married woman showing the day to day household spending in 1950. (From Oct 25th to 11th Nov 1950)
It shows the staple items purchased at this time and for the most part these are all that was necessary at that time, as most families were self- sufficient, i.e., They had their own potatoes, carrots, cabbage, onions and turnips. They kept their own fowl for eggs and meat. The eggs were often sold to the local shop to supplement the household income. A pig and sheep were also killed to provide a varied diet.
