Exhibition
The fascinating details of the Battle of Aughrim come to life through interpretive panels and models in this exhibition, which give the context and history of the battle, lead-up to the battle and aftermath. Visitors can closely examine the period costumes, rifles and pistols. The exhibition also features original artefacts and recreated objects from the battle period and from the years after 1691.

Can you imagine what it was like to be at the centre of the dramatic action during the Battle of Aughrim? Find out through our captivating film which recreates the visuals of men fighting for their lives, the crack of bullets fired, and the terror of soldiers hit. Immerse yourself in the terrible events of that momentous day in Irish history.
Battlefield Diorama
What tactics did the opposing forces use to try to win the fierce battle? Discover their strategies through this amazing battlefield diorama, which gives a bird’s eye view of the battlefield’s topography, and learn how the Generals’ choices contributed to the outcome.
The narration enables you to visualise the sequence of events as the battle is re-enacted before your eyes using the latest graphics technology.
You can also enjoy an interactive map board activity: ‘Wearing Marquis de Saint Ruth’s hat’. You can act as Saint Ruth — chief advisor to the Jacobites — as you examine the battlefield diorama and arrange your battle troops using the model soldiers and map board. What would you have done differently? Please note that children will be required to sanitise their hands before and after doing this activity.

Local Artefacts — Martin Joyce Collection
Muskets and cannon balls, blunderbuss and musket guns, swords, pike heads, gun money coins and perhaps the only remaining print of Mulvaney’s famous ‘The Cavalry Fight at Urrachree’ from 1691 — these are some of the gems in the Martin Joyce Collection at the Battle of Aughrim Visitor Centre. It comprises items collected by or given to Mr. Martin Joyce, Headmaster of Aughrim National School (1930s–1970s), from the battlefields and beyond.
