Clooneen

An Cluainín

In the western area of Kilthomas, in the barony of Loughrea, is Clooneen.

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books included other spellings of Clooneen. These were Cluainín, Cluainín, Cloonen, and Cloonevoneen. Clooneen is a small townland with all of the property belonging to Mr. Martin. The land was arable and rent was charged £1 per acre. The county cess or tax was 9 pence.

The Down Survey Map under ‘Clonrahin’ listed Teige McOwen McBryan O’Ffahy (Catholic), as the landowner in 1641 (pre-Cromwell) and Duke of York (Protestant) in1670 (post Cromwell). There were no specifications on profitable or unprofitable land.
