Gort: field
On the northeast boundary of Kilthomas is the townland Gortnanark. This is in the barony of Loughrea.
O’Donovan’s Field Name Books recorded Gort na Narc and Gurtnanork as other spellings of Gortnanark. This townland is small and nearly square. In this townland is a small portion of a bog, the rest of the land is arable. Mr. Burke is the property owner, the lease is by allotment, not by acre. The county cess or tax was 1 shilling.
The Down Survey Map under ‘Clonrahin’ listed Teige McOwen McBryan O’Ffahy (Catholic), as the landowner in 1641 (pre-Cromwell) and Duke of York (Protestant) in 1670 (post Cromwell). There were no land specifications.
Rep. Francis B. Knox was the only landowner in Gortnanark in 1855. Together, Peter Callanan, James Callanan, and Thomas Callanan leased holdings of a house, offices, and land, 70 acres, 2 roods, 12 perches, for £6-10-0 each. The total annual valuation of rateable property paid overall in Gorteenaniska was £19-10-0 for 70 acres, 2 roods, and 12 perches of house, offices, and land.

The children were farmer’s sons/daughters. All could read, write, and speak English. The parents also spoke Irish. There were no language specifications or marital specifications for James. The family resided in a 2nd class house of 3 rooms, 3 front windows, with a stable, a cow house, a piggery, and a barn. Pat was the landowner.
John Callanan (58) was a farmer living with his wife, Margaret Callanan (50) and their unmarried children: Teresia (25), Mary (23), and Margaret (20), who were all farmer’s daughters. All could read, write, and speak English. The parents also spoke Irish. The Callanans lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows, 3 rooms, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, and 1 barn. John owned the property.
