Gort is a small, improving post and market town in the county of Galway. It consists of three principal streets concentrating on the Square, where the market is held; it is remarkably clean, the streets are spacious and the houses well built.

It has a good market on Saturday and four fairs in the year; on the 17^th of March, the 10^th of May, the 11^th of August and the 7^th of November.

Post Office

Post Master Mr Richard Tohy. The Dublin mail is dispatched at thirty two minutes past three to Ennis, and returns at five minutes past eight in the morning. The mail to Loughrea every morning at fifty two minutes past eight and returns at twenty five minutes past three in the afternoon. The mail sent to the Burrin on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and returns on the same day.
