Ballinasloe – a well built and thriving market and town in the county of Galway, is pleasantly situated on the banks of the River Suck, 72 miles west of Dublin, 12 south west of Athlone, 20 northwest of Birr and 35 east of Galway. Its streets are wide and well paved and its houses are neat and clean, most of them kept white-washed every summer.

The public institutions of this town are a dispensary for relieving the infirmities of the poor; a savings bank established in 1823; and a farming society which allows premises for the best show of cattle at the October Fair. This fair, which is considered the largest in Ireland, continues from the 4th to the 11th of October for sheep, bullocks, horses, wool and all kinds of manufactured goods. The market is held on Saturday and the fairs are on May the 7th and October the 4th.
