Old Customs About Fowl

Loughrea, Co. Galway

It is said that no one should give away a clutch of eggs as it is like giving away your luck. People would not set an even number of eggs. To see a piece of straw on a hen’s tail is a sign of a funeral and to hear the cock crowing in the middle of the night is a sign of a death. Eggs are sprinkled with holy water before setting and in olden days the eggs were generally hatched in the kitchen and this is done is many houses today.
