Background
The creation of a Heritage Audit of the cultural and natural heritage of the Kilcornan Estate and surrounding area was first suggested by Marie Mannion, Heritage Officer, Galway County Council. The brief was then developed by the Kilcornan Community Development Association Ltd., Brothers of Charity, Kilcornan, to provide a unique opportunity to carry out a full profile of the heritage of this rich landscape. In May, 2020, Brothers of Charity, Kilcornan & Kilcornan Community Development Association Ltd. secured funding for the Heritage Audit from Galway Rural Development through the LEADER programme, financed by the Irish Government under the Rural Development Programme Ireland 2014-2020 and by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD): Europe investing in Rural Areas. Anne Carey, archaeologist and built heritage specialist, was contracted to undertake the audit in May, 2020.
