Englishtown

 

Englishtown is situated in the civil parish of Killoran, in the barony of Longford, Co Galway. It is bounded on the north by Killoran, on the west by Springfield, on the east by Cloonlahon Eyre and Derreenboy and on the south by Ardberreen.

 

O’Donovan’s Field name books provide 2 other spelling of this townland: Killorane and Killorian.

 

Down Survey map shows this land was owned in 1641 by Brassell Roe McShane O’Madden, a catholic. In 1670 it was owned by Colonel Garrett Moore, a catholic and Sir James Cuffe, a protestant. It states there were 52 unprofitable plantation acres of land. There were 182 acres of both profitable and forfeited acres of land.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 9 houses in English town in 1901. There were 51 residents in total: 26 were male and 25 were female. All residents were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The heads of the households were: John Murphy, Patrick Whelan, Thomas Deeley, William Donlan, Martin Hannon, John McHugo, Martin Whelan, Thomas Murphy and Mary Loughnane. The census taken on the 9th and 12th of April 1901 showed that the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The roofs were made with perishable material.

 

John Murphy (45) was a farmer. He was married to Bridget (33). There was no occupation recorded for Bridget. They had 3 children. Mary (10), Anne (8) and Michael (3) were scholars. All the family could read and write except for Michael. He could not read. They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms and 2 front windows. There were 3 outhouses: 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 barn. John Murphy owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Whelan (31) was a farmer. He was married to Mary (30). There was no occupation recorded for her. They had 4 children. Mary (4), Timothy (3) and Margaret (2) were scholars. Patrick was 8 months old.  Cathery Raftery (50) was a widow. She recorded her occupation as a nurse domestic servant. Cathery spoke Irish and English. Patrick and Mary could read and write. The rest of the household could not read or write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 barn and 1 shed. Patrick Whelan owned the land the house as situated on.

 

Thomas Deeley (25) was a farmer. Listed were his 3 siblings. All 4 occupants were single. Mary (35) and Anne (26) were recorded as farmer’s sisters. John (33) was recorded as a farmer’s brother. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 barn and 1 shed. Thomas Deeley owned the land the house was situated on.
