Poppy Hill

 

Poppy hill is situated in the civil parish of Killoran, barony of Longford, County Galway. It is bounded on the north by Chelsea and Gurteenawillan, in the parish Killaloghta, in the barony of Kilconnell, on the east by Killoran and Low Park, on the west by part of Chelsea and Poppyhill, in the parish of Killalaghtan, in the barony of Kilconnell and on the south by Ballinruane.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Book gives the following spelling for this townland name: Poppyhill and Cnocán a hioboil and Cnocán a huboil.

 

Downs Survey Map gives no information on who owned the land in the 1600s.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 11 houses in Poppyhill in 1901. 1 house was uninhabited. It had 2 outhouses. It was owned by Edwd Keirns. The other 10 houses had 63 residents in total: 38 were male and 25 were female. The heads of the household were: Martin Shea, Thomas Curley, Michael Daly, Thomas Daly, John Dolan, Thomas Daly, Mary Garvey, Michael Mooney, Thomas Mooney and Hugh Broderick. All residents were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The census taken on the 6th and 16th of April 1901 showed that the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built of stone, brick or concrete. The roofs were made of perishable material except for Hugh Broderick’s house. His was made of slate iron or tiles.

 

Martin Shea (35) was a farmer. He was married to Delia (32). She was recorded as a farmer’s wife. They had 2 children. Crissy (2) and Bridget (1) were scholars. Martin’s mother Mary (65) was a widow. She was recorded as a farmer’s mother. Martin’s nephew Gilbert Daly (16) was recorded as a farm servant. All the family could read and write except for Crissy and Bridget. Martin and Mary spoke Irish and English. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 5 outhouses. Martin Shea owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Thomas Curley (75) was a farmer. He was a widower. He spoke Irish and English. His daughter Ellen (39) was married to William Shaughnessy (40). There was no occupation recorded for Ellen. They had 8 children. Thomas (11), John (10), William (8), Patrick (7), Stephen (6), Bridget (5) and Michael (3) were scholars. James was 6 months old. William (40), Ellen, Thomas (11), John, William (8) and Patrick could read and write. The rest of the family could not read or write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 4 outhouses. Thomas Curley owned the land his house was situated on.

 

Thomas Daly (60) was a farmer. He spoke Irish and English. He was married to Bridget (36). There was no occupation recorded for her. They had 7 children. Gilbert (15) was recorded as a farmer’s son. Sarah (13) was recorded as a farmer’s daughter. Michael (11), John (10), Thomas (9), Catherine (6) and Martin (3) were scholars. Michael (50) was recorded as a farmer’s brother. He was single. All the family could read and write except for Thomas (9), Catherine and Martin. They could read only.  Michael (50) could not read or write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 4 outhouses. Thomas Daly owned the land his house was situated on.

 

John Dolan (74) was a farmer. He was a widower. He spoke Irish and English. He had 5 unmarried children. Michael (26), Thomas (24) and Patrick (14) were recorded as farmer’s sons. Anny (17) and Kate (15) were recorded as farmer’s daughters. All the family could read and write except for John. He could not read. They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 3 outhouses. John Dolan owned the land his house was situated on.

 

Michael Daly (60) was a farmer. He was married to Catherine (50). There was no occupation recorded for her. They had 6 unmarried children. John (28), Michael (23) and Pat (16) were recorded as farmer’s sons. Martin (20) was recorded as a carpenter. Kate (18) was recorded as a farmer’s daughter. Maggie (14) was a scholar. All the family could read and write except for Michael (60) and Catherine. They could not read. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms, 3 front windows and 4 outhouses. Thomas could not read. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 4 outhouses. Thomas Mooney owned the land his house was situated on.

 

Hugh Broderick (55) was a farmer. He was a widower. His unmarried son Thomas (24) and married son Michael (27) were recorded as farmer’s sons. His daughter in law Mary (27) was recorded as a farmer’s wife. His grandson Patrick was 1 month old. All the family could read and write except for Patrick. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 3 outhouses. Hugh Broderick owned the land his house was situated on.

There were 12 houses in Poppyhill in 1911. Two were uninhabited. One was owned by Kate Kearns. The other was owned by Alice Ryan. The other 10 houses had 67 residents in total: 42 were male and 25 were female. They could not read. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Hugh Broderick owned the land the house was situated on.

 

William Shaughnessy (55) was a farmer. He was married for 25 years to Ellen (55). They had 9 children with 9 living in 1911. Listed were 7 unmarried children. Thomas (20), John (19) and William (17) were recorded as farmer’s sons. Stephen (16), Michael (12), Margret (11) and James (9) were scholars. The entire family could read and write. All spoke Irish and English except for Michael, Margret and James (9). They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. William Shaughnessy owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Bridget Daly (47) was a widow. Listed were her 6 unmarried children. Gilbert (26), John (24), Michael (24) and Martin (14) were recorded as farmer’s sons. Sarah (23) and Catherine (17) were recorded as farmer’s daughters. Unmarried relative Michael Daly (69) was recorded as an agricultural labourer. All the family could read and write except for Michael (69). Bridget and Michael (69) spoke Irish and English. They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms and 2 front windows. There were 6 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Bridget Daly owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Dolan (37) and his sister Kate (27) were recorded as farmers. They were single. They could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 2 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 4 outhouses 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, and 1 shed. Michael Dolan owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michale [sic] Daly (34) was a farmer. His brother Thomas (25) was recorded as a farmer’s son. His sister Mary (21) had no occupation recorded for her. Pat Tierney (15) was recorded as a farm servant. The entire household were single. They could read, write and spoke English. They lived in a 2nd class house with 2 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 6 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Michael J Daly owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Daly (74) was a widower. He was a farmer. He spoke Irish and English. His son Michael (34) was recorded as a mason. His son Patrick (25) was recorded as a blacksmith. They were unmarried. His son John (40) was married for 7 years to Maria (34). John was recorded as a farmer’s son. They had 4 children with 4 living in 1911. Listed were 3 children. Francis (5) was a scholar. William was 2 years old and John J was 1 year old. Servant Thomas Fallon (73) was a widower. He was recorded as an agricultural labourer. All occupants could read and write except for Francis, William and John. Michael (74) could read only. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 6 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Patk Joseph was 3 years old and Michael Bernard was 1 year old. Servant Gabriel O Flood (20) recorded his occupation as a carpenter. The entire household could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 6 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Christina (12), Bridget (11), John (10), Josephine (9), Charlotte (8) and Agusta (5) were scholars. Martin’s mother Mary (78) was a widow. There was no occupation recorded for her. The entire family spoke Irish and English. They could read and write except for Mary. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 6 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Martin Shea owned the land the house was situated on.
