Lowpark

 

Lowpark is situated in the civil parish of Killoran barony of Longford Co Galway. It is bounded on the north by Gurteenawillen, on the west by Poppyhill and part Gurteenaur, on the east by Ballylooogue and on the south by Poppy hill and Killoran.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books gives this other spelling; Low Park

 

Downs Survey map under the name ‘Clonloghane’ shows this land was owned in 1641 by Bryan McDonnell O’Madden, a catholic. It was owned in 1670 by Edward Eyres, a catholic and Sir James Cuffe, a protestant.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 3 houses in LowPark in 1901. There were 19 residents in total: 11 were male and 8 were female. All occupants were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The census taken on the 8th of April 1901 showed that the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The roofs were made with perishable material.

 

Michael Donohue (63) worked as a shepherd. He was married to Bridget (60). Bridget was recorded as a shepherd’s wife. They had 3 unmarried children.  Martin (26) was recorded as a shepherd’s son. Bridget (24) and Mary (21) were recorded as shepherd’s daughters. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 barn and 1 shed. James Gaynor owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Mathew Mannion (48) was a farmer. He spoke Irish and English. He was married to Anie (46). She was recorded as a farmer’s wife. They had 7 unmarried children. Martin (21) was recorded as a farmer’s son. Patrick (15), Thomas (13), Edward (11), Delia (9), Margaret (7) and Joseph (5) were scholars. All the family could read and write except for Joseph. He could read only. They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms and 2 front windows. There were 3 outhouses: 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 shed. Mathew Mannion owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Thomas Head (66) was a widower. He was a farmer. He had 3 children. Kate (24) was recorded as a farmer’s daughter. Charles (21) was recorded as a farmer’s son. They were both single. Mary was 3 years old. Visitor Patrick Larkin (55) was single. He was recorded as an unemployed labourer. He could read. Thomas and Mary could not read. Kate and Charles could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows, 1 cow house and 1 piggery. Thomas Head owned the land the house was situated on.

Mathew Manning (61) was a farmer. He was married for 36 years to Anne (63). There was no occupation recorded for Anne. They had 11 children with 11 living in 1911. Listed were 3 unmarried children. Delia (19) and Margaret (17) were recorded as farmer’s daughters. Joseph (15) was recorded as a farmer’s son. The entire family could read, write and spoke Irish and English. They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms and 2 front windows. There were no outhouses recorded.  Mathew Manning owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Thomas Headd (79) was a widower. He was a farmer. He had been married for 27 years. He had 9 children with 4 living in 1911. Listed were his 2 unmarried daughters. Kate (35) was recorded as a farmer’s daughter. Mary (14) was a scholar. Kate and Mary could read, write and spoke English. Thomas spoke Irish and English. He could not read. They lived in a 3rd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were no outhouses recorded. Thomas Headd owned the land this house was situated on.

 

Michael Donohue (76) worked as a shepherd. He spoke Irish and English. He was married for 50 years to Bridget (72). There was no occupation recorded for Bridget. They had 11 children with 7 living in 1911. Listed were 3 unmarried children. Bridget (46) was recorded as a shepherd’s daughter. Martin (48) recorded his occupation as a shepherd. John (25) recorded his occupation as a shop assistant. Michael and Bridget (72) had 2 granddaughters. Bridget Donohue (10) was a scholar. Julia Coghlan was 1 year old. Martin Kelly (45) was single. He was recorded as a farm servant. All the family could read and write except for Bridget (72) and Julia Coghlan. They could not read. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 barn and 1 shed. Patk J Gaynor owned the land the house was situated on.
