Springfield is situated in the civil parish of Killoran, barony of Longford, Co Galway. It is bounded on the north by Killoran, on the east by Englishtown, on the west by Ballinruane and a small part of Killoran and on the south by Clooonagore and Gortevoher.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books gives no other spelling for this townland.

 

Downs Survey map shows this land was owned in 1641 by Bryan McDonnell O’Madden, a catholic. It was owned in 1670 by Edward Eyres, a catholic and Sir James Cuffe, a protestant.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 17 houses in Springfield in 1901. There were 63 residents in total: 33 were male and 30 were female. All residents were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway except for John Hogan (50). He was born in Co Clare. The heads of the households were: William Glynn, Margret Kelly, Michael Killalea, Thomas Pelly, Mary Donnellan, Catherine Tracey, John Hansberry, Patrick Kelly, John Kelly, Michael Donahue, Thomas Head, James Boland, Thomas Hoban, Pat Madden, Margaret Finnerty, Thomas Head and Honor Smith. The census taken on the 8th and 17th of April 1901 showed that the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The roofs were made with perishable material except for William Glynn’s, John Kelly’s and Michael Donohoe’s. Their roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

William Glynn (30) was a miller. He was married to Delia (25). There was no occupation recorded for Delia. They had 3 children. Thomas (3), Henoria (2) and Delia (1) were scholars. William’s had 2 unmarried brothers. Michael (27) was recorded as miller. Denis (26) was recorded as a farmer. Servant Pat Keely (20) was recorded as a general labourer. Mary Brisco (19) was recorded as a domestic servant. They were both single. All occupants could read and write except for Thomas, Henoria and Delia (1). They could not read or write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms, 2 front windows and 7 outhouses. William Glynn owned the land the house was situated on.
