Walsh town

 

Walshtown is situated in the civil parish of Killoran, Barony of Longford, Co Galway. It is bounded on the north by Ardberreen and Derreenboy, on the east by Addergoole and a small part of Ballyvaheen, on the west by Gortevoher and on the south by Corballybeg which is situated in the parish of Abbeygormacan.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name books provide this other spelling of the town land; Walshestown.

 

Downs Survey map under the name ‘Cloonereiligh & Gortvale’ shows Walter Lawrence Fitz John Fitz Walter, a catholic owned the land in 1641. Ulick Bourke, a catholic owned it in 1670. It states there were 118 plantation acres of unprofitable land. There were 234 plantation acres of profitable and 234 plantation acres of forfeited land.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 9 houses in Walshtown in 1901. There were 38 residents in total: 20 were male and 18 were female. The heads of the households were: Margaret Reynolds, Mary Brennen, Patrick Manning, Patrick Manning, Ellen Glynn, John Glynn, Mary Donovan, Michael Donovan and Patrick Salmon. All occupants were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The census taken on the 1st of April 1901 showed that the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The roofs were made with perishable material except for Margaret Reynolds. Her roof was made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

Margaret Reynolds (50) was a widow. She worked as a shepherd. She had 5 unmarried children. Michael (25), James (24), Joseph (23) and Malachy (18) were recorded as shepherd’s sons. Mary (20) was recorded as shepherd’s daughter. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms, 3 front windows and 5 outhouses. Thomas Leahy from Streamstown owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Mary Brennen (63) was a widow. She was a farmer. She spoke Irish and English. Her niece Delia Brien (20) was single. She was recorded as a farmer’s daughter. Mary could read. Delia could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 3 outhouses. Mary Brennan owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Manning (53) was a farmer. He was married to Mary (48). She was recorded as a farmer’s wife. They spoke Irish and English. They had 5 unmarried children. James Hardiman (36) was a farmer. He was married for 3 years to Bridget (31). There was no occupation recorded for her. Mary Brennan (76) was a widow. She was recorded as a domestic servant. Thomas Manning (31) was a farmer.  He was single.  His sister Mary Agnes (29) was single.  There was no occupation recorded for her.  Michael Coen (45) was married.  He was recorded as a farm servant.  All occupants could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows.  There were 4 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 barn and 1 shed.  Thos Manning owned the land the house was situated on.
