Famine Times

Co. Galway, Ireland

During the famine times of 1846 and 1847 the potatoes got blighted and failed. This district was thickly populated and the landlord had to get the oats to pay the rent. It is said that people were dying so fast that they had to be buried in their own garden. People had to eat turnips instead of the potatoes that were rotting in the pits.
