Fruit Cake without Fruit

When fruit and sugar could not be got during the War, a sweet cake was made by cutting up sugar beet into small cubes and using it in place of fruit and sugar. I am told it is very nice

Black Pudding

When a pig was killed, the blood was collected and mixed with oatmeal, onion, suet and spices. The cleared and cured intestines were filled with the moistures and boiled in a big black pot over an open fire.

Pig’s Head

Boil the pigs head, take all the meat from it and minced it. Mix with onion, salt and spices and press into a bowl, put a weight on it and when set cut out in slices.

Baked Apples

The apples were cured and filled with sugar and baked by putting hot coals from the fire around them.
