Ballybuck South is located in the southern part of the parish of Killinny. Killinny was in the barony of Kiltartan in County Galway.
1641 (pre Cromwell) and 1670 (post Cromwell), both recorded the Earl of Clanrickard as the owner, who was recorded as a Protestant. The townland was recorded under the name ‘Ballibuck.’ There were 80 plantation acres of unprofitable land and 81 plantation acres of profitable land.
O’Donovan’s Field Name Books reported Ballybuck South as a townland with soil, rock, and stone, and crops such as wheat and potatoes. The proprietor was Richard Gregory, Esq., Coole, Gort. Agent Edward L. Hunt, Esq., and middle man John Lopdell, Esq., Derryowen leased during the length of General Taylors life. There were 7 occupants leasing, all on a 21 year lease that ranged from 16 to 20 shillings per acre per year. The county cess or tax was 2 shillings 9.5 pence, the tithe was withheld. John Diviny was the townland authority and Diviny and Hynes were the prominent names.

John Walsh was leasing from John Burke, and John Hynes was leasing from James Curtin. James Curtin occupied William H. Gregory’s land for £7-15-0. The land was 54 acres, 2 roods, 2 perches. John Burke occupied William H. Gregory’s land for £14-10-0. The land was 161 acres, 1 rood, 35 perches. John Hynes leased from James Curtin for £0-10-0 .This was a house and land of 0 acres, 3 roods, 10 perches. John Walsh leased from John Burke for £0-3-33. This was a house and land of 0 acres, 3 roods, 33 perches.
