Ballydonagh

Ballydonagh is situated in the civil parish of Kiltormer barony of Longford, County Galway.  It is bounded on the north by Gorryhill, on the east by Gravehill, Gortnaleig and Skenegrehy, on the south by Feigh, Skycur and Cloonaneen and on the west by Kiltormer east.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give other spellings of this townland: Baile Donchadha and Ballendonogh.

 

Down Survey map shows this land under the name ‘Duggin alias Skeaghnagechye’ was owned by Rory McDugin O’Larkin, a catholic in 1641.  It was owned by Dominick Roch, a catholic in 1670.  It states there was 15 plantation acres of unprofitable land, 159 plantation acres of profitable land and 159 plantation acres of forfeited land.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 10 houses in Balldonagh in 1901.  There were 49 residents in total: 26 were male and 23 were female.  All occupants were Roman Catholic.  They were born in Co Galway.  The heads of the households were: Thomas Gready, Michael Grady, John Berminghan, John Hibbits, Margaret Larkin, James Tierney, James Tierney, Patrick Grady, John Coyne and John Brennon.  The census taken on the 10th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings.  The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete.  The roofs were made with perishable material except for Patrick Grady’s and John Brennon’s.  Their roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

Thomas Gready (45) and his brother Martin (37) worked as shepherds.  They were both single.  They could read.  Their cousin Mary Colahan (27) was married.  She was recorded as a housekeeper.  She could read and write.  She had 2 children: Martin (2) and Kate (7 months).  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 1 front window and 5 outhouses.  Thomas Gready owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Grady (40) worked as an agricultural labourer.  He was married to Catherine (26).  There was no occupation recorded for her.  They could read and write.  Their daughter Mary was 10 months old.  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 outhouse.  John P Brennon owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John Bermingham (60) and his son Thomas (18) were agricultural labourers.  John was a widower.  He could read and spoke Irish and English.  Thomas could read.  He was single. They lived in a 4th class house with 2 rooms, no front windows and 1 outhouse.  John P Brennon owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John Hibbits (38) worked as an agricultural labourer.  He was married to Winifred (27).  She was recorded as a housekeeper.  Their daughter Mary A was 1 year old.  The entire family could not read.  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 2 outhouses.  John Hibbits owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Margaret Larkin (50) was a widow.  She was a farmer.  Her sons John (20) and Thomas (17) were single.  They were recorded as farmer’s sons.  Margaret and John could read.  Thomas could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 2 rooms, 3 front windows and 5 outhouses.  Margaret Larkin owned the land the house was situated on.

 

James Teirney (72) was a farmer.  He spoke Irish and English.  He was married to Maria (45).  There was no occupation recorded for her.  They had 5 unmarried children.  Mary (22) was recorded as a housekeeper.  Bridget (20), Teresa (18) and Anne (17) were recorded as farmer’s daughters.  William G (16) was recorded as a farmer’s on.  The entire family could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms, 3 front windows and 8 outhouses.  James Tierney Sr owned the land the house was situated on.

 

James Tierney (66) was a farmer.  He was married to Maria (50).  There was no occupation recorded for her.  They had 7 unmarried children.  John (27), Patrick (26), Thomas (21) and James (19) were recorded as farmer’s sons.  Margaret (24) and Nora (22) were recorded as housekeepers.  Marion (13) was a scholar.  The entire family could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms, 3 front windows and 11 outhouses.  James Tierney Jr owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Grady (55) and his son Patrick (18) worked as agricultural labourers.  Patrick (18) was single.  Patrick (55) was married to Bridget (50).  She was recorded as a housekeeper.  Their other son William (10) was a scholar.  Patrick (55) could read.  The rest of the family could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 1 outhouse.  Patrick Grady owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John Coyne (50) was a carpenter.  He was married to Mary (50).  She was recorded as a housekeeper.  They had 2 unmarried children.  Mary (24) was recorded as a general servant domestic.  Patrick (22) was recorded as an agricultural labourer.  He could read and write.  The rest of the family could read.  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 outhouse.  John Coyne owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John P Brennan (28) was a farmer.  He was married to Katie (29).  They had 5 children.  May (5) and Thomas (4) were scholars.  Joseph was 3 years old.  Habert was 2 years old and John was 6 months old.  Maggie Flynn (20) was recorded as a nurse domestic servant.  Nora Gorman (22) was recorded as a general servant domestic.  They were both single.  Mary (5) could read.  The 4 youngest children could not read.  The 4 adults could read and write.  They lived in a 1st class house with 7 rooms, 6 front windows and 12 outhouses.  John Brennan owned the land the house was situated on.

Martin Grady (59) worked as a shepherd.  He was married for 4 years to Nora (37).  They had 5 children with 5 living in 1911: Mary (4), Nora (3), John (2), Patrick (1) and Bridget 1 day old.  Nora (37) could read and write.  The rest of the family could not read.  They lived in a 3rd class with 2 rooms and 2 front windows.  There were 2 outhouses:1 stable and 1 shed.  James J Hoban owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Grady (57) was a farmer.  He was married for 11 years to Catherine (40).  They had 3 children with 2 living in 1911: Mary (10) and Bridget (8).  The entire family could read and write.  Michael spoke English.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 shed.  Michael Grady owned the land the house was situated on.

 

James J Hoban (32) was a farmer.  He was married for 6 years to Kate G (46).  He had 5 unmarried step children with 5 living in 1911.  Listed were 4 children with the surname Brennan.  Michael (14), Joseph (13), John (12) and Hubert (11) were scholars.  Servant Patrick Egan (29) was single.  He worked as an agricultural labourer.  The entire household could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 7 rooms and 5 front windows.  There were 7 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 2 sheds.  James J Hoban owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John Hebbit (54) worked as a general labour.  He was married to Winifred (33) for 12 years.  There was no occupation recorded for her.  They could not read.  They had 7 children with 4 living in 1911.  Mary (10) was a scholar.  Margaret was 5 years old.  Bridget was 4 years old and James was 8 months old.  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 shed.  John Hebbit owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Margaret Larkin (73) was a farmer.  She spoke Irish.  She was a widow.  She had been married for 38 years.  She had 5 children with 4 living in 1911.  Listed were 2: John (30) and Thomas (24) were single.  They were recorded as farmer’s sons. Margaret and John could read.  Thomas could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows.  There were 3 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house and 1 shed.  Margaret Larkin owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Maria Tierney (60) was a widow.  She had been married for 38 years.  She had 7 children with 7 living in 1911.  Listed were 4 unmarried children.  Patrick (36), Thomas (31) and James (29) were farmers.  There was no occupation recorded for Marion (23).  The entire family could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows.  There were 7 outhouses: 1 stable, 2 cow houses, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed.  Maria Tierney owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Maria Tierney (58) was a widow.  She had been married for 35 years.  She had 6 children with 6 living in 1911.  Listed were 3 unmarried children.  Teresa (29) and Annie (28) had no  occupations recorded.  William (26) was a farmer.  The entire family could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms and 3 front windows.  There were 6 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house 1 barn and 1 shed.  Maria Tierney owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Coyne (34) worked as a general labourer.  There was no occupation listed for his sister Mary Anne (30).  They were both single.  They could read and write.  They were Roman Catholic and were born in Co Galway.  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms and 2 front windows.  There were 3 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house and 1 shed.  Patrick Coyne owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Grady (66) was married for 43 years to Bridget (65).  They could read only.  They had 9 children with 6 living in 1911.  Patrick and his son Willie (20) worked as general labourers.  Willie was single.  He could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 shed.  Patrick Grady owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Daniel Caughlin (22) and his brother John (20) worked as agricultural labourers.  There was no occupation listed for their sister Eliza (19).  All 3 were single.  They could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 2 front windows.  There was no outhouses recorded.  Margaret Larkin owned the land the house was situated on.
