Kiltormer East

Kiltormer East is situated in the civil parish of Kiltormer East, barony of Longford Co Galway. It is bounded on the north by Kiltormer West and Gurtnamona in Cloontooskert, on the east by Sumerset, Gravehill and Ballydonagh, on the south by Cloonaneen and Motee and
on the west by Kiltormer West.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give 2 other spellings of this townland: Killtormoyre and
Kiltormer.

 

Down Survey map show this townland under the name Killtormore was owned by Nicholas Hayn McJohn McThomas, a catholic in 1641. It was owned by the Bishop of Clonfert, a protestant in 1670.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 13 houses in Kiltormer East in 1901. There were 58 residents in total: 27 were male and 31 were female. They were Roman Catholic except for William A Hardy’s family. They were Church of Ireland. All occupants were born in Co Galway except for and the Hardiman family and John McNamara. The Hardiman’s were born in New York. John was born in Co Cork. The heads of the households were: William A Hardy (50), Mary Haverty, John Brennan, John Booth, William Foley, Michael Larkin, Julie Madden, John Quinn, Thomas Ward, Thomas Keating, Thomas Markham, John McNamara and Michael Donlan. The census taken on the 4th of April 1901 shows the houses were built as private dwellings. Julie Madden’s, John Quinn’s, Thomas Markham’s and John McNamara’s house walls were built with perishable material. The other 9 house walls were built with stone, brick or concrete.
