Feagh

Feagh is situated in the civil parish of Kiltormer barony of Longford Co Galway.  It is bounded on the north by Ballydonagh, on the south east by Craughwell, on the south by Garr and Skycur and on the northwest by Skycur and Ballydonagh.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name books give other spellings of this townland: Feigh, Fiodhach, Fiadh and Fiach.

 

Down Survey map gives no information on who owned the land in the 1600s.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 3 houses in Feagh in 1901.  There were 7 residents in total: 4 were male and 3 were female.  All occupants were Roman Catholic.  They were born in Co Galway except for Emily F Delahunt.  She was born in Dublin City.  The heads of the households were: Denis Delahunt, Kevin Caughlan and Michael Leonard.  The census taken on the 11th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings.  The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete.  Denis Delahunt house roof was made with slate, iron or tiles.  The other 2 roofs were made with perishable material.

 

Denis Joseph Delahunt (54) was a farmer.  He was married to Emily F (38).  She was born in Dublin city.  His brother Michael J (45) was recorded as shooting game.  Bridget Anne Brady (24) was a general servant domestic.  They were both single.  The entire household could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 9 rooms, 5 front windows and 9 outhouses.  Denis J Delahunt owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Kevin Caughlan (54) was a farmer.  He was married to Mary (42).  They could not read.  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 2 outhouses.  Kevin Caughlan owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Leonard (30) was a widower.  He was recorded as an agricultural labourer.  He could read and write.  He lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 outhouse.  Michael Leonard owned the land the house was situated on.

There were 8 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 coach house, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 dairy, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed.  Denis Delahunt owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Leonard (57) was an agricultural labourer.  He could read and write.  He was married for 7 years to Norah (60).  She could not read or write.  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 piggery.

 

Kieran Coughlan (72) was a farmer.  He could not read or write.  He was married for 27 years to Mary (62).  She could not read.  They both could speak English.  They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 fowl house.
