Kill is situated in the civil parish of Kiltormer barony of Longford Co Galway. It is bounded on the north by Motee, on the east by Motee and Lisheenaguile, on the south by Clare Madden in Kilquain or Quansborough and on the west by Addergoole in Abbeygormican and Attykee.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give other spellings of this townland: Cluain and Kylle.

 

Down Survey map show this townland under the name Craughill was owned by Roger O’Larkan, a catholic in 1641. It was owned in 1670 by Dominick Rock, a catholic.

 

Census 1901

 

There was 1 house in Kill in 1901. It was owned by William A Hardy. The census taken on the 12th of April 1901 showed the house was built as a private dwelling. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The roof was made with perishable material. The head of the house was Patrick Brien (40). He worked as a shepherd. There was no occupation recorded for his wife Margaret (30). They could read and write. Their children: Martin (6), Delia (4), Mary (2) and Catherine (1) could not read. Martin was a scholar. The entire family were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 6 outhouses.

 

Census 1911

 

Patrick Brien (56) was a shepherd. He was married for 17 years to Margaret (40). They had 7 children with 7 living in 1911. Martin (16), Bridget (15), Mary (14), Kate (11) and Peter Paul (7) were scholars. Margaret (4) and Terence (11 months) could not read. The rest of the household could read and write. Boarder Thomas Whyte (31) was single. He was recorded as a general labourer. The entire household were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. They lived in a 2 nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery and 1 shed. The census taken in April 1911 show the house was built as a private dwelling. The walls were made with stone, brick or concrete. The roof was made with perishable material. Mrs A Hardy of Kiltormer East owned the land the house was situated on.
