Newtowneyre

Newtowneyre is situated in the civil parish of Kiltormer barony of Longford Co Galway.  It is bounded on the north by Derreen, on the east by Kiltormer West, on the south west by Motee and Gurtarahan and on the north west by Cooleny East.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give 1 other spelling of this townland: Newtown and Derrine.

 

Down Survey map show this townland under the name Newtowne was owned by Donnogh McBrassell O’Maddin, a catholic in 1641.  It states there were 60 plantation acres of unprofitable land, 73 plantation acres of profitable land and 73 plantation acres of forfeited land.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 3 houses in Newtowneyre in 1901.  There were 5 residents in total: 2 were male and 3 were female.  The heads of the households were: Marion Dallus Eyre, Patrick Mulkern and John Robinson.  The census taken on the 12th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings.  The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete.  The roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

Marion Dallus Eyre (66) and her sister in law Grace (76) was annuitant.  They were Church of Ireland.  They could read and write.  Mary Gilchreest (30) was a general domestic servant.  She was Roman Catholic.  She could read.  Marion Dallus was born in Edinburgh Scotland.  She was a widow.  Grace and Mary were born in Co Galway.  They were both single.  They lived in a 1st class house with 13 rooms, 14 front windows and 9 outhouses.  Marion D Eyre owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Mulkern (50) was single.  He was superannuation from D.M.P.  He was Roman Catholic.  He was born in Co Galway.  He could read and write.  He lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 1 front window and 1 outhouse.  Marion D Eyre owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John Robinson (43) was single.  He was a gardener.  He was Roman Catholic.  He was born in Co Kildare.  He could read and write.  He lived in a 3rd class house with 1 room, 1 front window and 1 outhouse.  Marion D Eyre owned the land the house was situated on.

There were 2 houses in Newtown Eyre in 1911.  1 house was uninhabited.  It was owned by Marion D Eyre.  The other house had 2 female residents.  The head of the household was Marion D Eyre.  The census taken on the (cannot read) of April 1911 show the houses were built as private dwellings.  The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete.  The roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

Marion Dallas Eyre (76) was widow.  She was church of Ireland.  Her income derived from the estate.  She was born in Edinburgh Scotland.  Jane Stanton (70) was single.  She was Roman Catholic.  She was born in Co Galway.  She was a general domestic servant.  Both residents could read and write.  They lived in a 1st class house with14 rooms and 22 front windows.  There were 2 outhouses: 1 fowl house and 1 store.  Worthington Eyre owned the land the house was situated on.
