Craughwell is situated in the civil parish of Kiltormer barony of Longford Co Galway.  It is bounded on the north by Belview alias Lissereagan, on the east and north by Annacalla Doorus in Clonfert, on the south east by Feabeg in Fahy East, on the south by Moorfield alias Gortnamona and on the south west by Feigh and Ballydonagh.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give no other spelling for this townland.

 

Down Survey map show this townland under the name Craughill was owned by Roger O’Larkan, a catholic in 1641.  It was owned by Dominick Roch, a catholic in 1670.  It states there were 362 plantation acres of profitable land and 362 plantation acres of forfeited land.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 15 houses in Craughwell in 1901.  1 house was uninhabited.  It was owned by Thomas Downy of Belview.  There were 62 residents in total: 40 were male and 22 were female.  They were Roman Catholic.  They were born in Co Galway except for Eugene Hefferin.  He was born in America.  The heads of the households were: Patrick Kilkenny, John Keating, Martin Brennan, James Hynes, James Fahey, Michael Brennan, Thomas Brennan, Patrick Keating, James Stanton, Mary Hynes, Patrick Martin, Patrick Callagy, John Rutledge and Patrick Kilkenny.  The census taken in April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings.  The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete.  The roofs were made with perishable material.
