Garrison

Garrison is situated in the civil parish of Kiltormer, barony of Longford Co Galway.  It is bounded on the north by Skycur and Feigh, on the east by Craughwell, on the south by Raheen in Kilquain or Quansborough and on the west by Skycur.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name books give no other spelling of this townland.

 

Down Survey map show this townland under the name Gangin alias Dangin was owned by Rory McDungin O’Larkin, a catholic in 1641.  It was owned by Ulick earl of Clanricard Burke, a catholic in 1670.  It states there were 153 plantation acres of profitable land and 153 plantation acres of forfeited land.

 

Census 1901

 

James Lynch (35) was a farmer.  His brothers Patrick (40) and John (32) were recorded as farmer’s brothers.  Their sister Kate (37) was a housekeeper.  The entire family were single.  They could read and write.  They were Roman Catholic and were born in Co Galway.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms and 4 front windows.  There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house and 1 barn.  The census taken on the 2nd of April 1901 show the house was built as a private dwelling.  The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete.  The roof was made with slate, iron or tiles.  James Lynch owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Census 1911

 

James Lynch (43) was a farmer.  There was no occupation recorded for his brother Patrick (46).  Their sister Kate (49) was recorded as a farm servant.  All 3 were single.  They could read and write.  They were Roman Catholic and were born in Co Galway.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows.  There were 3 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house and 1 barn.  The census taken on the 8th of April 1911 show the house was built as a private dwelling.  The walls were built with stone brick or concrete.  The roof was made with slate, iron or tiles.  James Lynch owned the land the house was situated on.
