Churning With a Barrel Churn

Killallaghtan, Co. Galway

Our churn is a barrel churn and it has an iron stand. It is a low churn, about 15 inches with rounded sides. It is a daisy churn, manufactured by the Beatty Brothers. My mother does the churning, twice a week. If a stranger comes into the house they must help if the churning, for fear they bring all the butter with them when they leave. There is a piece of glass on our churn and when the butter is ready you can see it on the glass. Some time ago, people used to put a piece of coal under the churn for luck.
