Sa bhliain 1315, thug Éamonn de Brús arm as Albain anall go Cúige Uladh gur ghabh Dún Dealgan agus Carraig Fhearghais. Ba é a athair, Roibeard de Brúis, Rí na hAlban agus ba ghearr go dtáinig seisean i dtír in Éirinn gur cuireadh tús le dhá bhliain achrainn.

Sa bhliain 1596, d’ionsaigh Taoiseach de chuid na nGael, Aodh Rua Ó Domhnaill Baile Átha an Rí agus cuireadh an baile trí thine ach throid fórsaí láidre leis an mbaile a chosaint agus na hAlbanaigh a dhíbirt.

Battle of Aughrim

In 1315, Edward Bruce led an army of Scots into Ulster and captured Dundalk and Carrickfergus. His father Robert Bruce was King of Scotland and soon landed in Ireland and set up two more years of turmoil.

In 1596, Athenry was sacked and burned by the Gaelic Irish Chieftain Red Hugh O’Donnell but strong forces defended the town and fought back the Scots.

Meiler de Bermingham built the Castle and advanced it to its present level.
