Bunaíodh Séipéal Naomh Muire sa bhliain 1240. Sa bhliain 1324, chuir muintir de Burgo ciste ar fáil chun atógáil a dhéanamh ar Shéipéal na Mainistreach. Bhí Baile Átha an Rí ar cheann den aon bhaile mór déag a raibh ionadaíocht thar a gceann sa Pharlaimint sa bhliain 1380. Bhronn an Pápa Boniface IX Bulla an Loghtha sa bhliain 1400 ar aon duine a thabharfadh cuairt ar an mainistir i mBaile Átha an Rí. Loisceadh an Mhainistir sa bhliain 1423. Timeline

In the year 1178, Baron of Athenry was created for Peer de Bermingham. Richard de Burgo was awarded lordship in the year 1227. In 1240 construction beings in Athenry Castle. St. Mary’s Church was found in 1240. In 1241 the Dominican Priory was built in reverence of St. Peter and St. Paul and was thought to be finished in 1271. In 1244, Athenry gained the right to hold a fair. Athenry was attacked by O’Connor’s in 1249. In 1310, the Murage Charter was granted for 3 years. In 1316 the Battle of Athenry began on the 10th August and William de Burgo and Richard de Bermingham’s forces defeated the King of Connacht Felim O’Connor. In 1324, the de Burgo family funded the rebuild of the Priory Church. Athenry was one of the eleven towns represented at Parliament in 1380. In 1400 Pope Boniface IX granted the Bull of Indulgence to those who visited the priory in Athenry. The Priory burned down in 1423. In 1484, St. Mary’s Church was made collegiate by Archbishop Donatus O’Murray of Tuam. Sons of Earl of Clanricard capture and burn the town in 1574. Henry Sidney proposes the construction of the inner wall to reduce the size of the town in 1576. The town was captured again by the sons of the Earl in 1577. In 1583 the map of the town shows the dividing walls, less than half finished. Red Hugh O’Donnell attacked and destroyed Athenry in 1597.
