Richard de Burgo

Richard de Burgo

Bronnadh ríocht Chonnacht ar Richard de Burgo sa bhliain 1227, agus deimhníodh tiarnas aigesean ar an réigiún sa bhliain 1234. Idir an bhliain 1237 agus 1240 a bhunaigh Meiler de Bermingham, vasáilleach de chuid Risteáird, Baile Átha an Rí, cé go gcreidtear go raibh cónaí ar na Gaeil ann roimhe sin agus gur chuir na Normannaigh leis an mbaile a bhí acusan. Síltear go raibh tábhacht le Baile Átha an Rí mar dhaingean straitéiseach d’fhonn an t-iarthar a chosaint ar ionsaí.

Richard de Burgo

The kingdom of Connacht was awarded to Richard de Burgo in 1227, his lordship was confirmed in 1234. Between 1237 and 1240 Richard vassal Meiler de Bermingham founded Athenry, though it is believed that there was already some Irish settlement there before and the Normans built onto it. It is thought that Athenry was a strategic strong point to protect the west from invasion.
