Kilboght, Cill Bhocht, Church of the poor

Kilboght is situated in the civil parish of Kilreekil.  It lies in the south western part of the parish and is bounded by Cahirnagarry, Emlagh and Droght and by Kilmeenian and Ballybroder in the parish of Killeen.

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give other spellings of this townland: Kilbought, Kilbaght, Kilbougla and Killbaghly.

Down Survey Map shows that this land under the name ‘Kilbought’ was owned by the Earl of Clanrickard, a protestant in 1670.  It states there were 90 planation acres of profitable land and 90 planation acres of forfeited.

Census 1901

There were 2 houses in Kilbought in 1901. There were 8 residents in total: 5 were male and 3 were female. All occupants were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway except for John and Patrick Glennane. They were born in England. The census taken on the 5^th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The roofs were made with perishable material.

Catherine Glennane (42) was a farmer. She was a widow. Her sons John (24) and Patrick (22) had no occupations recorded for them. Catherine’s brother-in-law Martin (62) was recorded as a labourer. The 3 male occupants were unmarried. Martin could read and spoke Irish and English. Patrick could read and write. Catherine and John could not read. The family lived in a 3^rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 piggery. Catherine Glennane owned the land the house was situated on.

Martin Donnellan (53) was a farmer. He was married to Margaret (31). There was no occupation recorded for her. She could read and write. Their children: Mary Ellen (2) and Patrick (3 months) could not read. Martin spoke Irish and English. He could not read. They lived in a 2^nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 1 stable and 1 cow house. Martin Donnellan owned the land the house was situated on.

There were 2 houses in Kilbought in 1911. There were 13 residents in total: 7 were male and 6 were female. All residents were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. They had 5 children with 5 living in 1911: Mary Ellen (11), Patrick (9), James (6), Catherine (4) and Jane (1 ½). Margaret, Mary Ellen and Patrick could read and write. The family lived in a 2^nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 4 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 barn. Martin Donnellan owned the land the house was situated on.

Catherine Glennon (65) was a farmer. She was a widow. She had been married for 40 years. She had 3 children with 2 living in 1911. Her son Patrick (33) was a farmer. He was married for 3 years to Margaret (23). They had 3 children with 3 living in 1911.  Thomas (3), John (2) and Martin (5 months) could not read. Patrick and Margaret could read, write and speak English. Catherine spoke Irish and English. She could not read or write. The family lived in a 2^nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 4 outhouses: 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery and 1 barn. Patrick Glennon owned the land the house was situated on.
