Contains a. r. p. about 25 acres of which is bog, and 15 acres was wood, the remainder arable and pasture, the houses and roads are in good repair. It is the property of Lord Clonbrock held by deed forever. The County Cess is included with Ballyboggan.

 

Situation:

Lies in the West of this parish, in the barony of Kilconnel. Bounded by Clonbrock and Ballyboggan townlands in said Barony, by Kilglass in the Barony of Cloonmacnoon in this parish, on the South by Ahascragh River which separates it from Clonbrock Demesne and on the S. West by Clonbrock Demesne, in the parish of Fohanagh and Barony of Kilconnel.

Census of Ireland (1821- 1911)

The first full population census of Ireland was taken in 1821 and the first four Irish censuses were arranged by county, barony, civil parish and townland.

 

1821:  Only some fragments for small parts of county Galway survive. There are no records      for Ahascragh.

1831:  The only surviving records are from Counties Antrim and Derry.

1841:  There are no surviving records for County Galway.

1851:   There are no surviving records for County Galway.

1861:  Census records for 1861 and 1871 were deliberately destroyed by the government

1881:  The records for 1881 and 1891 were pulped as waster paper during the shortages of World War I.

Griffith’s Valuation 1847-1864

Lord Clonbrock was the immediate lessor in the townland of Ballybaun.

 

Plot 1: William Egan paid £6 15s for 15 acres and 15 perches of land and £1 5s for a house and offices.

Plot 2: Thomas Hardiman leased a house and office with 7 acres and 6 perches of land for which he paid £3 for the land and £1 5s for the buildings annually.

Plot 3A: Catherine Costello leased a house with 2 acres and 1 rood of land for  £1 for the land and 15s for the house.

Plot 3B: Catherine Costello paid 15s for 1 acre, 2 roods and 17 perches of land.

Plot 4a: Honoria Costello leased a house with 2 acres, 3 roods and 37 perches of land for £1 5s for the land and 12s for the house.

Plot 5Aa: Lord Cronbrock had, in fee (for himself), a gate house and offices with 72 acres, 1 rood and 4 perches of land that had an annual ratable valuation of £29 for the land and £2 15s for the buildings.

Plot 5Ab: Lord Clonbrock had, in fee (for himself), a miller’s house, flour and corn mill and a kiln that had an annual ratable valuation of £35.

Plot 5B: Lord Clonbrock had, in fee (for himself), 5 acres and 9 perches of land that had an annual ratable valuation of £1 10s.

Plot 5C: Lord Clonbrock had 26 acres, 2 roods and 8 perches of bog that had an annual ratable valuation of 2s.

Plot 6: Thomas Hardiman, Catherine Costello, Honoria Costello, James Kilkenny and James Jenkins jointly leased 20 acres, 2 roods and 22 perches of land for £8.

Plot 7: James Kilkenny leased a house with 5 acres, 3 roods and 27 perches of land for £2 15s for the land and 15s for the house.

Plot 8: James Costello paid 15s for 1 acre, 2 roods and 17 perches of land.

Plot 8Ab: James Costello leased a house and office for 8s.

Plot 9: James Jenkins leased a house and office with 5 acres, 2 roods and 6 perches of land for £2 15s for the land and 15s for the buildings.

Plot 10: Michael Staunton leased a house and offices with 20 acres and 29 perches of land for which he paid £7 10s for the land and £3 10s for the buildings annually.

Plot 11: Thomas Staunton paid £11 15s for 27 acres, 2 roods and 38 perches of land and £2 for a house and office.

Plot 12: Thomas O’Neill paid £4 15s for 11 acres, 3 roods and 38 perches of land and £1 for a house.

Plot 13a: John Tracy leased a house with 4 acres, 1 rood and 16 perches of land for £1 15s for the land and 10s for the house annually.

Plot 13b: Andrew Coleman paid 10s for a house.
