This townland contains a. r. p. (106 acres, 3 roods and 39 perches), all arable, the South part flat and wet, the rest dry and of a good quality. Houses and roads in good repair. It is the property of Sir Rosse Mahon, held by deed for ever and pays £10. 7. 9¾ County Cess.

Ervallagh Eighter lies in the western side of this parish in the barony of Cloonmacnoon, bounded by Cool, Ervalagh Ooghter and Castlegar West in said barony, by Castlegar East and Eglish townlands in the barony of Killian.

Overview of the townland.

There was just the 1 house in the townland at this time and it was occupied, listed as being a private dwelling and was constructed of stone, brick or concrete walls with a slate, iron or tiled roof. It was a listed as being a 2nd class dwelling and had 7 rooms with 3 windows in the front. The enumerator for the area was Const. William Kearney.

 

House 1: Carty / McWalter

Michael (49) was listed as the head of this household and he had been married to Mary (31) for 9 years and during that time they had had 3 children and all had survived until that time. Those children also lived in the house and they were Maria (6), Peter Joseph (4) and John S. (2) and also in the house was a servant, Patrick McWalter (40). They were all born in Co. Galway and were Roman Catholic with the exception of Mary, who was born in Co. Roscommon. John S. could not read, Peter Joseph could read only and all the others could read and write. Michael was a farmer, Maria and Peter Joseph were scholars and Patrick was a farm servant. The house was a 2nd class dwelling with 7 rooms and they had 3 stables, 4 cow houses, a calf house, a piggery, a barn and a shed. The landholder was Michael Carty.

House 1: Carty / Coolahan

The widow, Maria (71) was the head of this household and she shared the house with her son, Michael (39), Daughter, Delia (35) and a servant, William Coolahan (17). They were all born in Co. Galway and were Roman Catholic. All the Carty family could read and write and Maria was a farmer, Michael was a farmer’s son, Delia was a farmer’s daughter and William was a farm servant. The landholder was Maria Carty.

 

Griffith’s valuation (1847 – 1864)

The immediate lessor for all tenements was the Rev. Sir William V.R. Mahon Bart.

Plot 1: Thomas Kennedy leased a house, office and 95 acres and 23 perches of land for which he paid £57 5s for the land and £4 15s for the buildings.

Plot 2: Michael Cosgrave and Patrick Tully jointly leased 3 acres and 26 perches of land for which they each paid £1 annually.

Plot 3: Thomas Morrissey and James Tyrell jointly leased land, Thomas paid 3s for 1 rood and 17 perches and James paid 2s for 33 perches.

Plot 4: Edward Kennedy paid £3 5s for 5 acres, 1 rood and 21 perches and £1 5s for a house and offices.

Plot 5: Thomas Kennedy (Ned) paid £1 2s for 1 acre, 3 roods and 14 perches of land.

Plot 6: Michael Kennedy leased 4 acres, 1 rood and 9 perches of land for which he paid 2 15s annually.
