Kilglass is situated in the western side of the parish in the barony of Clonmacnoon, bounded by Clooncannon Kelly, Clooncannon Dillon, Curnamuckla, Weston and Mountain in said barony, by Ahascragh West, Boolabaun and Ballyboggan in the barony of Kilconnel, in this parish, by Ahascragh river which separates it from Derrymore and Clonbrock Demesne in Fohanagh Parish and Kilconnel Barony.

Census of Ireland (1821- 1911)

The first full population census of Ireland was taken in 1821 and the first four Irish censuses were arranged by county, barony, civil parish and townland.

 

1821:  Only some fragments for small parts of county Galway survive. There are no records      for Ahascragh.

1831:  The only surviving records are from Counties Antrim and Derry.

1841:  There are no surviving records for County Galway.

1861:  Census records for 1861 and 1871 were deliberately destroyed by the government

Griffith’s Valuation (1847 -1864)

Lord Clonbrock was the immediate lessor for the townland of Kilglass tenements unless otherwise stated.

 

Plot 1: Denis Kelly, James Kelly and Peter Torpey [sic] jointly leased 9 acres of land for which each paid £1 18s annually.

Plot 2: Denis Kelly leased a share of 9 acres, 1 rood and 14 perches of land for £1 7s.

Plot 2a: Martin Kelly leased a house and a share of 9 acres, 1 rood and 14 perches of land for £1 7s for the land and 15s for the house.

Plot 2b: Peter Torpey [sic] leased a house, office and a share of 9 acres, 1 rood and 14 perches of land for which he paid £2 14s for the land and £1 5s for the buildings.

Plot 3: Denis Kelly paid £2 7s for 5 acres, 1 rood and 15 perches of land and £1 10s for a house.

Plot 4: Bartholomew Finnerty leased a house, offices and 21 acres, 2 roods and 28 perches of land for £11 12s for the land and £1 2s for the house.

Plot 5A: Thomas Finnerty paid £6 5s for 10 acres, 2 roods and 34 perches of land and £1 2s for a house and office.

Plot 5B: Thomas Finnerty paid 6s for 1 acre and 20 perches of land.

Plot 6A: This plot was 6 acres, 2 roods and 10 perches of land that had an annual ratable valuation of £4.

Plot 6Ba: Martin Geraghty (Tom) leased a house and office and shared part of 16 acres, 2 roods and 19 perches of land for 15s for the buildings and part of £8 12s for his share of the land.

Plot 11A: Michael Kelly paid £2 10s for 4 acres and 35 perches of land and 12s for a house and offices.

Plot 18B: James Staunton paid £5 9s for 10 acres, 3 roods and 15 perches of land and £2 for a house and offices.

Plot 19: Michael Geraghty leased a house and 4 acres, 3 roods and 25 perches of land for £3 7s for the land and 12s for the house.

Plot 20a: James Nowlan [sic] leased a house, offices and 4 acres, 3 roods and 4 perches of land for which he paid £3 3s for the land and 15s for the buildings.

Plot 20b: Thomas Nowlan [sic] paid 5s for a garden of 36 perches and 5s for a house.

Plot 21A: John Staunton leased a house, offices and 17 acres, 3 roods and 35 perches of land for £10 5s for the land and £1 10s for the buildings annually.

Plot 21B: John Staunton paid £3 5s for 8 acres and 2 roods.

Plot 22: Patrick Connolly paid 7s for 2 roods and 30 perches of land and £1 10s for a house and office.

Plot 23: Patrick Connolly leased part of 15 acres, 2 roods and 30 perches of land for £4.

Plot 23a: Mary Kelly leased a house, offices and part of 15acres, 2 roods and 30 perches of land for £4 for the land and £1 2s.

Plot 24: Patrick Curley paid £6 2s for 11 acres, 2 roods and 17 perches of land and 15s for a house and offices.

Plot 25a: Edward Martin leased a house, offices and 5 acres of land for which he paid £1 11s for the land and £2 10s for the house and offices.

Plot 25b: Edward Martin leased a school house that had an annual ratable value of £2 15s.

Plot 33A: Michael Downey leased 2 acres, 2 roods and 10 perches of land for £1 16s.

Plot 33B: Michael Downey leased a house, offices and 2 acres, 2 roods and 38 perches of land for which he paid £1 15s for the land and £1 5s for the buildings.

Plot 34a: Michael Duffy paid £7 10s for 14 acres and 21 perches and £2 for a house and offices to Lawrence Kerrans [sic].
