Rabbit Park is located in the civil parish of Kilbegnet, Barony of Ballymoe, County Galway.

The Down Survey Map states the 1670 (Post Cromwell) owners of Rabbit Park were John Bourke (Catholic) and Sir Hurley Maurice (Protestant). The Down Survey name for Rabbit Park was Gravagh.

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books indicates the Northern boundary is formed by a road and the Southern boundary is a stream. There no feature of note within this townland. The land is made up tillage and pasture.

Census 1841-1851

According to the 1851 census, Rabbit Park consists of 55 acres, 0 roods and 10 perches. The 1841 population was a total of 51 people, 26 were male and 25 were female. The 9 houses in 1841 were all occupied. By 1851 the population had decreased to 22 people, 13 were male and 9 were female. There were 5 houses, and all were occupied. The poor law valuation rate paid in 1851 was £20-15-0.

Griffith’s Valuation 1847-1864

According to Griffith’s Valuation, Allen Pollock was the immediate lessor of the land. Patrick Quirke paid £3-0-0 for house and land measuring 7 acres, 0 roods and 8 perches.

Allen Pollock kept land measuring 2 acres, 0 roods and 15 perches, herd’s house, office and land measuring 2 acres, 1 rood and 8 perches, land measuring 0 acres, 3 rood and 1 perch, another lot of land measuring 2 acres, 1 rood and 23 perches, a final lot of land measuring 17 acres, 3 roods and 15 perches and cottier’s house and garden measuring 0 acres, 0 roods and 16 perches in fee. Holding 2 was worth £15-0-0.

Michael Mullins rented 3 lots of land on the same holding paying £1-10-0. Lot 1 measured 1 acre, 0 roods and 14 perches. Lot 2 was 0 acres, 3 roods and 23 perches. The final lot measured 0 acres, 3 roods and 1 perch. Richard Corr rented 3 acres 1 rood and 11 perches of house and land for £2-0-0.

Bernard Burke rented house and land measuring 5 acres, 0 roods and 34 perches and land measuring 1 acre, 1 rood and 4 perches for £3-10-0. Daniel Muldoon paid £4-15-0 for house and land measuring 9 acres, 3 roods and 37 perches. The total annual valuation of rateable property was £29-15-0.

Census 1901 and Census 1911

Despite research the 1901 and 1911 Census records for Rabbit Park have not not been found as of the 10th of July 2020. Research is ongoing.
