Ballydonnellan East lies in the south west of the civil parish of Killallaghtan barony of Cloonmacnoon Co Galway. It is bounded by Ballydonnellan West and Shanballycoleman in the said barony. It is bounded by Tooree, Chelsea and Lissacullaan in the barony of Kilconnell. It is bounded by Carhoorea in the parish of Killoran, barony of Longford and by Ballyhogan and Lissalimma in the parish of Abbeygormagan.

Census 1901

 

There were 2 houses in Ballydonnellan East in 1901. There were 10 residents in total: 6 were male and 4 were female. The heads of the households were: George Ker Mahon and Bridget Clarke. All residents were born in Co Galway. They were Roman Catholic except for George Ker Mahon. He was Protestant Church of Ireland. The census taken in April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick, or concrete. The house roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles.

George Ker Mahon (49) was a widower. He was recorded as a landowner. Recorded were 3 unmarried servants. Mary Murphy (27) was recorded as a house and parlour maid. Kate Murphy (25) was recorded as a cook. Thomas Winters (27) was recorded as a coachman and groom. The entire household could read and write. They lived in a 1st class house with 26 rooms, 63 front windows and 18 outhouses. George Ker Mahon owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Bridget Clarke (58) was a widow. There was no occupation recorded for her. She had 4 unmarried sons. John (33), Dominick (31), Thomas (28) and William (26) were recorded as shepherds. She was born in Devon England. The census taken on the 4th of April 1911 show the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The house roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

George J Ker Mahon (58) was married for 5 years to Carolina M (37). They recorded their occupations as ‘independent means’. There were no children recorded for them. Eliza Wilcock (50) was recorded as a lady’s maid. Kate Murphy (31) was recorded as a cook domestic servant. They were both single. Margaret Garvey (27) was recorded as a parlour maid. Mary Coghlin (17) was recorded as a house maid. There marital status was not recorded. The entire household could read and write. They lived in a 1st class house with 23 rooms and 24 front windows. There were 22 outhouses: 8 stables, 2 coach houses, 1 harness room, 2 cow houses, 2 calf houses, 1 dairy, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 boiling house, 1 barn, 1 turf house and 1 shed. George Ker Mahon owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John Clarke (43) was a farmer. He had 3 brothers. Dominick (41) was recorded as a general labourer. Thomas (39) and William (37) were recorded as shepherds. Their niece Delia Kelly (18) had no occupation recorded. The entire family were single. They could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 8 outhouses: 1 stable, 2 cow houses, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. George Ker Mahon owned the land the house was situated on.
