Killagh Beg, Cill Achaidh Bheag, little churches

Killaghbeg is situated in the north west of the civil parish of Killallaghtan barony of Kilconnell Co Galway. It is bounded by Cappavahy, Hazelfort. Ballanful, Ballymabilla and Killaghmore in this parish and by Curraneena in the parish of Kilconnell in the said barony. It is three and a half miles west of Aughrim.

 

O’Donovans Field Name Books give this other spelling of this townland: Cilleacha.

 

Down Survey map give no information on who owned this townland in the 1600s.

 

The 1901 census gives no information on who lived in this townland at that time.

 

Census 1911

 

There were 6 house in Killagh Beg in 1911. There were 37 residents in total: 24 were male and 13 were female. They were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The heads of the household were: Patrick Davey, Michael Broderick, Thomas Raftery, Lawrence Beegan, Mary Lally and Thomas Dowd. The census taken on the 8th of April 1911 show the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. Patrick J Davy’s and Thomas Dowd’s house roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles. The other house roofs were made with perishable material.

 

Patrick Davy (57) was a landed proprietor IP. Denis Dowd (35) was a groom & servant. Mary Maloney (40) was a housekeeper & servant. All occupants were single. They could read and write. They lived in a 1st class house with 10 rooms and 5 front windows. There were 18 outhouses: 6 stables, 1 coach house, 1 harness room, 2 cow houses, 1 dairy, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 boiling house, 1 barn, 1 turf house and 2 sheds. Pat J Davy owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Broderick (72) could speak Irish and English. He was married for 31 years to Catherine (50). She could speak English. They had 11 children with 9 living in 1911. Recorded were 7 unmarried children. John (25) was a carter. Michael (21) and Thomas (19) along with their father were farm labourers. There was no occupation recorded for their daughter Ellen (17). Patrick (15), Joseph (12) and Bridget (5) were scholars. Catherine could not read. Michael (72) could not read or write. The rest of the family could read and write. They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms and 2 front windows. There were 3 outhouses:1 cow house, 1 fowl house and 1 shed. Michl Broderick owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Thomas Raftery (60) was a farmer and stone mason. He was married for 18 years to Mary (45). They had 5 children with 4 living in 1911. Michael (17) and John (15) were single. Thomas (13) and Mary K (9) were scholars. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 4 outhouses:1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 fowl house and 1 shed. Thos Raftery owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Lawrence Beegan (38) was a farmer. He had 7 siblings: John (30), Patrick (28), Michael (26), Thomas (25), Anne (24), Margaret (22) and William (20). All 8 siblings were single. Their nephew Joseph (3) was a scholar. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery and 1 fowl house. Lawrence Beegan owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Mary Lally (72) was a widow. She could speak Irish and English. She was a farmer. Her children: Thomas (40) and Margaret (30) and her grandson Patrick (22) were all single. Mary could read only. The rest of the family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 2 outhouses: 1 cow house and 1 piggery. Mary Lally owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Thomas Dowd (74) was a herd. He was married for 40 years to Catherine (66). They had 9 children with 9 living in 1911. Recorded were 4 unmarried children: Jane (36), John (31), Joseph M (28) and Margaret (27). Margaret was a dressmaker. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms and 2 front windows. There were 4 outhouses: 1 stable, 2 cow houses and 1 barn. Pat J Davy owned the land the house was situated on.
