Chelsea lies at the southern boundary of the civil parish of Killallaghtan barony of Kilconnell Co Galway. It is bounded by Poppyhill, Brackloon and Gurteenawillan in the same barony and by Ballydonnellan East in the barony of Cloonmacnoon and Poppyhill in the parish of Kiloran barony of Longford.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books gives this other spelling of the townland: Baile an Tobair.

Census 1901

 

There were 2 houses in Chelsea in 1901. There were 15 residents in total: 5 were male and 10 were female. The heads of the households were: Peter Shaughnessy and Ellen Campbell. All residents were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway except for Ellen Campbell. She was born in Co Kerry. The census taken on the 1st of April 1901 show the houses with built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. Peter Shaughnessy’s house roof was made with perishable material. Ellen Campbell’s house roof was made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

Peter Shaughnessy (50) worked as a shepherd. His sisters, Bridget (48) and Julia (38) had no occupations recorded for them. All 3 siblings were unmarried. They could speak Irish and English. Their niece Maria (13) and nephew Peter (12) were scholars. Peter (50) could not read. The rest of family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 2 outhouses. James Ryan of Ash broke owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Ellen Campbell (75) was a widow. She and her son Charles (45) were farmers. Charles was married to Bridget (45). There was no occupation recorded for Bridget. They had 7 children. Johanna (17) was single-. Peter (15), Eliza (13), Michael (10) and Pelia (8) were scholars. Margaret (5) and Nannie (2) could not read. The rest of the family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 6 rooms, 6 front windows and 5 outhouses. Charles Campbell owned the land the house was situated on.

Charles Campbell (58) was a farmer. He was married for 30 years to Bridget (56). There was no occupation recorded for Bridget. She could speak Irish and English. They had 9 children with 8 living in 1911. Listed were 4 unmarried children. Peter (24) and Michl (18) were recorded as farmer’s sons. Delia (19) and Annie (12) were recorded as farmer’s daughters. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms and 6 front windows. There were 7 out houses: 2 stables, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Charles Campbell owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Peter Shaughnessy (65) worked as a shepherd. His sisters Bridget (67) and Julia (52) and his niece Maria (23) had no occupations recorded for them. He had 2 nephews. Peter (22) was recorded as a shepherd. Pat (17) was recorded as a farmer servant. The entire household were single. Peter, Bridget and Julie could read only. The rest of the family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 4 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 shed. Mary Ryan owned the land the house was situated on.
