Ballynamuddagh, Baile na mBodach

Ballynamuddagh is situated in the civil parish of Killallaghtan, barony of Clonmacnowen, Co Galway. It lies in the eastern side of the parish and is bounded by Cloonkeen East, Cloonkeen West and Lurragan Great in the said parish and in the said barony. It is also bounded by Oatfield in the parish of Aughrim and barony of Kilconnel.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give these other spellings of this townland: Ballynamuddgh, Ballynamoddagh and Ballynamodough.

 

Down Survey map show this land under the name ‘Ballamabilly’ was owned by the Earl of Clanrickard, a protestant in 1641 and in 1670. It states there were 92 plantation acres of unprofitable land and 301 plantation acres of profitable land.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 8 houses in Ballynamuddagh in 1901. There were 43 residents in total: 21 were male and 22 were female. All residents were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway except for Margaret Ryan and Martin O’Halloran. Margaret was born in Roscommon. Martin was born in Clare. The heads of the households were: Margaret Ryan, Kate Fahey, John Loughnane, Stephan Loughnane, Martin Manning, Mary Treacy, Edward Treacy and Martin Murray. The census taken on the 4th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. Margaret Ryan’s and John Loughnane’s house roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles. The other house roofs were made with perishable material.

 

Margaret Ryan (36) was single. She was a National School Teacher. Her nephew Michl J O’Connor (12) was a scholar. They could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms, 2 front windows, 1 stable and 1 barn. Michl Commingham (hard to read) of Raheen owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Kate Fahey (70) was a farmer. She was a widow. Her children John (41) and Margaret (35) were single. Her grandson Thomas Loughnane (18) was single. Kate could read. The rest of the family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 barn and 1 shed. John Fahey owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John Loughnane (65) was a farmer. There was no occupation recorded for his wife Mary (50). They had 6 unmarried children. Thomas (24) was recorded as a farmer’s son. Maria (22) and Margaret (18) were recorded as‘household work’. Annie (14), Ellen (12) and Agnes (10) were scholars. The family lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 7 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. John Loughnane owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Stephen Loughnane (55) was a farmer. He was a widower. He had 6 unmarried children: Mary Jane (26), Patrick (24), Delia (22), Nora (20), Margaret (18) and Stephen (14). Stephen was a scholar. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 3 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house and 1 barn. Stephen Loughnane owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Martin Manning (60) was a farmer. There was no occupation recorded for his wife Catherine (57). They could speak Irish and English. They could not read. Their sons: Michael (21) and Martin (19) were single. They could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 3 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house and 1 shed. Martin Manning owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Mary Treacy (64) was a widow. She was recorded as a shepherdess. Her son Martin (24) was single. They could not read. They lived in a 3rd class house with 1 room and 1 front window. There were no outhouses recorded. Patrick Hoban/Dolan owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Edward Treacy (45) was a farmer. There was no occupation recorded for his wife Bridget (35). They had 6 children. Mary (14), Annie (13), Margaret (9), Thomas (7) and Patrick (4) were scholar. Joseph (2) could not read. The rest of the family could read and write. Edward’s mother Anne (70) was a widow. His brother Patrick (41) was single. He was recorded as a farmer. The lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 4 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Edward Treacy owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Martin Murray (60) was a farmer. He was a widower. He had 4 unmarried children: John (24), Patk (22), Ellen (25) and Mary (28). Boarder Martin O’Halloran (31) was single. He was recorded as an N Teacher. He was born in Clare. The entire household could read, write and speak English. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 3 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house and 1 barn. Martin Murray owned the land the house was situated on.

Mary’s granddaughter, Mary Anne Daly (4) could not read or write. The rest of the family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 8 outhouses: 2 stables, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Mary Loughnane owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Stephen Loughnane (68) was a farmer. He was a widower. His children: Patrick (36), Delia (31) and Margaret (27) were single. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 7 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 potato house and 1 barn. Stephen Loughnane owned the land the house was situated on.

Edward Treacy (55) was a farmer. He was married for 25 years to Bridget (48). They had 7 children with 7 living in 1911. Thomas (17), Pat (14), Joseph (11) and Edward (8) were scholars. Annie (21) and Margaret (19) were single. Edwards’s brother Patrick (52) was single. He was a farm labourer. Edward (55) and Patrick could speak Irish and English. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 7 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Edward Treacy owned the land the house was situated on.
