Newcastle is situated in a north east part of the civil parish of Killallaghtan barony of Kilconnell Co Galway. It is bounded by Ballynaglogh, Hazelport and Rayhill townlands in the said parish.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name books give one other spelling of this townland: Caislean Nuadh.

 

Down Survey map show this townland was owned by Laughlin Kelly, (catholic) in 1641. It was owned by the Earl of Ormond, (Protestant) in 1670. It states there were 49 plantation acres of unprofitable land. There were 298 plantation acres of both profitable and forfeited land.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 8 houses in Newcastle in 1901. 1 house was uninhabited. The other 7 houses had 33 residents in total: 23 were male and 10 were female. All occupants were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The heads of the households were: Bridget Dooley, Michael Power, Bridget Reynolds, Kate Flanagan, John Murray, Peter Dillon and Patrick Fox. The census taken on the 15th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. Michael power’s, Bridget Reynold’s and Peter Dillon’s house roofs were made with perishable material. The other house roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

Bridget Dooley (50) was a widow. She was a farmer. She had 7 children. Patrick (30), Mary Anne (22), Andrew (20) and Peter (18) were single. Thomas (15), William (9) and Joseph (7) were scholars. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 2 outhouses. Bridget Dooley owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Power (54) was farmer. He could not read. His wife Eliza (36) could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 2 outhouses. Michael Power owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Bridget Reynolds (40) was a widow. She had 3 sons. Michael (19) and Patrick (16) were single. Denis (13) was a scholar. Bridget could not read. Michael could read only. Patrick and Denis could read and write. They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms and 2 front windows. Bridget Reynolds owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Kate Flanagan (48) was a widow. She had 6 unmarried children. She and her son Patt (30) were herds and farmers. Norah (25) and Mary (20) were seamstresses. James (17) was a farm labourer. William (11) and Thomas (9) were scholars. The family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 7 outhouses. Kate Flanagan owned the land the house was situated on.

 

John Murray (70) could speak Irish and English. He was married to Bridget (50). They had 4 unmarried children. John and his sons Thomas (22) and Peter (20) were shepherds. Martin (14) and Agnes (12) were scholars. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 4 outhouses. J.F.D. Longworth owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Peter Dillon (40) and his brother William (38) were single. They could read and write. Peter was a herd and farmer. William was a farmer. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 3 outhouses. Peter Dillon owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Fox (30) was an agricultural labourer. There was no occupation recorded for his sister Catherine (28). His nephew Gilbert Dillon (20) was an agricultural labourer. His nephew Thomas Halloran (14) was a scholar. The entire household were single. They could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. J.F.D. Longworth owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Census 1911

 

There were 11 houses in Newcastle in 1911. There were 47 residents in total: 36 were male and 11 were female. All residents were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The heads of the households were: Martin Mannion, Thomas Hannon, Mathew Hynes, Bridget Dooley, Peter Dillon, Edward J Stankard, Kate Flanagan, Bridget Reynolds, John Murray, Michael Power and Patrick Fox. Patrick Fox (50) was a herd. His sister Catherine Halloran (48) was a widow. His nephew Thomas Halloran (24) was a farm labourer. Patrick and Thomas were single. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 3 outhouses: 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 shed. Patrick Fox owned the land the house was situated on.
