Cloonkeen East is situated in the east of the civil parish of Killallaghtan barony of Clonmacnowen Co Galway. It is bounded by Ballagbrien, Lissawolaun, Cooltymurraghty, Park, Lurragan Small, Clonkeen West and Ballynamuddagh in this parish and by Lisswolaun, Hardwood in the parish of Aughrim in the said barony.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books gives other spellings of this townland: Clonkeene, Clownkine and Cloonkin.

 

Down Survey map gives no information on who owned this land in the 1600s.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 5 houses in in Cloonkeen East in 1901. There were 28 residents in total: 17 were male and 11 were female. All residents were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway except for Michael Costello. He was born in Co Roscommon. The heads of the households were: Patrick Murray, Patrick Shiel, Robert Claffey, Michael Dermody and Michael Darmody. The census taken on the 10th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. Michael Darmody’s house roof was made with, slate, iron or tiles. The rest of the house roofs were made with perishable material.

 

Patrick Murray (55) was a farmer. He could speak English. There was no occupation recorded for his wife Mary (60). Their children: John (30), Bridget (25) and Kate (22) were single. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 2 outhouses. Patrick Murray owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Sheil (40) was a farmer. There was no occupation recorded for his wife Sarah (34). Patrick’s uncle James Murray (54) was single. His father in law Michael Lyons (82) was a widower. They were both farmers. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 3 outhouses. Patrick Sheil owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Robert Claffey (38) was single. He was a farmer. He was born in Co Roscommon. He could read and write. Michael Costella (70) was married. He was recorded as a farm servant. He could not read. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms, 4 front windows and 4 outhouses. Robert Claffey owned the land the house was situated on.

She was born in Co Roscommon. The heads of the households were: Mary Anne Murry, Patrick Shiel, Michael Dermody, Michael Dermody and Robert Claffey. The census taken on the 11 of April 1911 show the houses were built as private dwellings. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. Mary Anne Murry (80) was a widow. Her daughter Catherine (27) was single. Her son John (41) was a farmer. He was married for 4 years to Anne (36). She was born in Co Roscommon. They had 3 children with 3 living in 1911. Patrick (3), John (2) and Thomas (7 months) could not read. The rest of the family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 barn and 1 shed. Mary Anne Murry owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Patrick Shiel (52) was a farmer. He was married for 12 years to Sarah (48). Patrick’s uncle James Murray (73) was single. The entire household could read and write. There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery and 1barn Michael Dermody Junior owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Michael Dermody (58) was a farmer. His sister Maria (69) was single. He was married for 28 years to Annie (47). They had 12 children with 8 living in 1911. Patrick (26), Mary Delia (24), John (22), Michael Joseph (20), James (18) and Julia Anne (14) were single. William Martin (11) and Francis (9) were scholars. The entire family could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms and 4 front windows. There were 7 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 boiling house and 1 shed. Michael Dermody Senior owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Robert Claffey (50) was a farmer. He was married for 8 years to Margaret (36). They could speak Irish and English. They had 5 children with 5 living in 1911. John (7) and Thomas (6) were scholars. Joseph (5), Robert (4) and Annie (3) could not read or write. Michael Courley (30) was recorded as a farm servant. Ellen Horey (16) was recorded as a domestic servant. They were both single. Ellen could speak English. Michael and Thomas could not read or write. The rest of the household could read and write. They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 8 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 boiling house, 1 barn and 1 shed. Robert Claffey owned the land the house was situated on.
