An Sleachan Beag

Slihaun Beg lies in an eastern part of the civil parish of Killallaghtan barony of Kilconnell Co Galway.  It is bounded in the said barony by Stahaanmore, Mountain, Gurtnahimrisson and Ballynaglogh townlands in this parish and by Oatfield in the parish of Aughrim which is 3 miles south of Killconnell.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give other spellings of this townland: Slithean Beag and Slahaanbeg.

 

Down Survey map gives no information on who owned this land in the 1600s.

 

Census 1901

 

There were 3 houses in Slihaun Beg in 1901.  There were 12 residents in total: 6 were male and 6 were female.  All residents were Roman Catholic.  They were born in Co Galway.  The heads of the households were: John Moloney, Honoria Moloney and Margaret Kenny.  The census taken on the 13th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings.  The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete.  John Moloney’s house roof was made with perishable material.  The other 2 house roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles.

 

John Moloney (72) was a farmer.  There was no occupation recorded for his wife Bridget (62).  Matthew Ford (25) was single.  He was recorded as a farm servant.  The entire household could read, write and speak Irish and English.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 3 rooms, 4 front windows and 4 outhouses.  John Moloney owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Honoria Moloney (35) was a widow.  She was a farmer.  She could speak Irish and English.  She had 4 children.  Mary (11), Thomas (10) and James (7) were scholars.  Delia (4) could not read.  John Larner (65) was a widower.  He was recorded as a farm servant.  He could not read.  James could read only.  The rest of the family could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 4 rooms, 5 front windows and 3 outhouses.  Honoria Moloney owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Margaret Kenny (72) was a farmer.  She could read, write and speak Irish and English.  Her niece Mary Dolan (40) and her Nephew Thomas Dolan (20) could not read.  All 3 occupants were single.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms, 5 front windows and 5 outhouses.  Margaret Kenny owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Census 1911

Mary Anne Kenny (55) was widow.  She was a farmer.  She had 10 children with 10 living in 1911.  Recorded were 2 children. Annie (24) was single.  James (11) was a scholar.  The entire family could read, write and speak English.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms and 4 front windows.  There were 5 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 coach house, 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 barn.  Mary A Kenny owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Mary Connolly (55) was married for 32 years.  She had 12 children with 8 living in 1911.  Mary and her sons Martin (27) and William J (22) were farmers.  There was no occupation recorded for her daughter Delia (25).  The 3 said children were single.  Her daughter Winifred A (12) was a scholar.  Mary’s brother Patrick M Ryan (47) was a widower.  He was an R I C Pensioner.  Mary’s nephew Daniel J Ryan (11 months) could not read.  The rest of the family could read and write.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms and 4 front windows.  There were 7 outhouses: 1 stable, 1 coach house, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 barn and 1 shed.  Mary Connolly owned the land the house was situated on.

Hanoria Moloney (55) was a widow.  She was a farmer.  She could speak Irish.  She had 4 children.  Mary (22), Thomas (21) and James (18) were single.  Delia (13) was a scholar.  The entire family could read, write and speak English.  They lived in a 2nd class house with 5 rooms, 5 front windows and 1 shed.  Hanoria Moloney owned the land the house was situated on.
