Civil Parish of Killallaghtan

Mountain is situated in an eastern part of the civil parish of Killallaghtan barony of Killconnel Co Galway. It is bounded by Gurtnahimrisson, Stahaanbeg, Stahaanmore and Cappataggul townlands in the said barony and by Poulathlugga in the barony of Cloonmacnooon.

 

O’Donovan’s Field name book gives no other spelling of this townland.

 

Down Survey map gives no information on who owned this land in the 1600s.

 

Census 1901

Edward Carty (40) and his brother Thomas (30) were single. Edward was a farmer. Their aunt Mary Joyce (69) was a widow. She could speak Irish and English. She could not read. Edward and Thomas could read only. The entire family were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The census taken on the 11th of May 1901 show the house was built as a private dwelling. It was a 2nd class building with 3 rooms, 3 front windows and 5 outhouses. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The roof was made with perishable material. Edward Carty owned the land the house was situated on.

 

Census 1911.

Edward Carty (48) was a farmer. He was single. He could read only. His aunt Mary Joyce (88) could not read. They were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway. The census taken on the 4th of May 1911 show the house was built as a private dwelling. It was a 2nd class building with 3 rooms and 3 front windows. There were 4 outhouses: 2 stables, .1 cow house and 1 shed. The walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. The roof was made with perishable material. Edward Carty owned the land the house was situated on.
