Ballymabilla is situated in the western side of the civil parish of Killallaghtan barony of Kilconnell Co Galway. It is bounded by Killaghmore, Killaghbeg, Ballanful, Ballynaglogh, Gurtnahoon, Toormore and Eastwell townland in the said barony in this parish. It is bounded by Glanaskehy in the parish of Kilreekil barony of Athenry and by Turkeyland and Ashbrook in the parish of Killaan in the barony of Kilconnel. It lies about 4 miles west of Kilconnel.

 

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books give other spellings of this townland: Baile Magh Bile, Baile Maibhle and Ballevabillie.

Census 1901

 

There were 11 houses in Ballymabella in 1901. There were 73 residents in total: 35 were male and 38 were female. All occupants were Roman Catholic. They were born in Co Galway except for John Dolan (50). He was born in Co Roscommon. The heads of the households were: Martin Hynes, Michael Regan, William Treacy, John Dolan, Thomas Martin, Harry Dillan, Michael Dooley, Catherine Martin, Thomas Twohy, Michael Kelly and John Dolan. The census taken on the 9th of April 1901 show the houses were built as private dwellings. John Dolan/Walter S Taylor’s house walls were built with perishable material. The other 10 house walls were built with stone, brick or concrete. Michael Regan’s and William Treacy’s house roofs were made with slate, iron or tiles. The other 9 house roofs were made with perishable material.

 

Martin Hynes (42) was a farmer. He was married to Mary (30). They had 4 children. Patrick (12) and Mary Anne (9) were scholars. Michael was 2 years old and Julie was 6 months old. Patrick and Mary Anne could read and write. The rest of the family could not read. They lived in a 3rd class house with 2 rooms, 2 front windows and 1 outhouse. Michael Regan (45) was a shepherd. He could speak Irish and English. He was married to Sarah (32). They had 5 children. Thomas (11), Mary (10), Sarah (8) and Michael (5) were scholars. Annie was 3 years old. Michael and Annie could not read. Michael (45) and Sarah (8) could read only. The rest of the family could read and write.
