The following is a list of customs that have been collected locally.

Red haired woman

When men were going to the fair if they met a red haired woman they would turn back.

St Martin’s day

On St Martin’s day on 11th November, chicken or some other fowl was killed and the blood scattered. Feast day in November.

Christmas

On the eve of the twelfth night, twelve days after Christmas, Twelve small candles were lit and the rosary was said.

Candle lighting

The custom of the candle lighting in the window at Christmas began in Penal times when Priests were being persecuted by the military; the people put a candle in the window to show the priest this was a safe place. When the military questioned what they were for they told them it was to show the way to Joseph and Mary for the birth of Christmas.
