The local fairs held in this district are held in Ballygar Mt. Bellew and Glan. Fairs were always held in towns except up to a few years ago when a fair was held in Newbridge where there were only two shops and a priest’s house. Long ago, this was a very important as fair people came from a radius of six miles. The only place that fairs were held in former times and are not held now in Newbridge. Toll of three pence a head is paid on animals sold in Mount Bellew. Luck money is given to the buyer by the seller. The greater the price of the animal the greater the luck penny. The halter is also given away with the animal. A bargain is made by striking their two hands together and by dividing the money that is between them. When the animal is sold, it is marked with a bit of dirt or with raddle.
